Table Quiz in aid of Children’s Homes in Ethiopia: revisited

Our family holiday to Ethiopia this year was long planned. Before we travelled we organised a fund-raising table quiz in the Glenside pub at the end of October to raise funds for two Children’s homes that we have intimate ties with – AgoHelma Childrens Home and Kebebe Tshehay Childrens Home. The table quiz was generously supported by many competitive participants from the Eneclann team and the wider genealogy community. The quiz, along with some other donations raised over €5,500.

Ethiopia is an amazing country. Experiences from the incredible rock hewn churches in Lalibela to the medieval castles of Gondor and beautiful tranquillity of Lake Awasa compare with any destination in the world.  The tastes of enjera and wot, smells of spices, incense and coffee and the colours and movements  of traditional dress and dancing will stay with us for a lifetime.

Addis Ababa has changed, growing and developing at an incredible pace. As we approached the Children’s homes the familiar landmarks were only recognisable when we were almost on top of them such have the neighbourhoods changed.

In AgoHelma we were fortunate enough to meet the founder, Abebech Gobena ‘the Mother to many’, who has over a lifetime with her team built a home, schools,  medical centres and vocational programs to care for those children. A contribution of €3,575 was given to support these initiatives.

In Kebebe Tshehay we met with the Manager Membere, with whom we arranged for the purchase of two washing machines, two thousand nappies and five thousand pairs of medical gloves. For the one hundred and fifty children in the home this was perhaps not the most exciting donation but for the support staff who have to wash, change and care for babies through to eight year olds, pragmatism wins every time.
