United States of Ireland: New book reveals America’s most Irish locales

The Map of Ireland: How People of Irish Heritage Spread Through America

A recently published book, Ancestry & Ethnicity in America, outlines the fact that 12 American States have Irish populations numbering more than 15%.

In each of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island more than 20% of the population have declared Irish ancestry.

Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West Virginia all have populations with more than 15% Irish heritage.

In total, almost 12 per cent of the American population – or 35 million people – claim an Irish ancestry, while a further 5 million claim a Scotch-Irish background.

The figures are taken from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2006-2010.
