County Focus – Kilkenny
We have a few more unusual titles for County Kilkenny: Kilkenny Grand Jury Presentments provides valuable social information on the county, such as accounts paid to fever hospitals, the county gaol and asylums. It is also a good insight into the workings of local government in Ireland. For the history of the county try Meehan’s The Confederation of Kilkenny which is a history of the Confederate Wars of the mid 17th century, or Carrigan’s History of the Diocese of Ossory. This book contains a history of the church from the earliest times, as well as an extensive introduction to Kilkenny’s political history. The area’s history is presented on a parish by parish basis, and the book is copiously illustrated with photographs, maps and drawings. If its names you’re after then you might strike lucky with our range of Slater’s and Pigot’s directories covering Kilkenny, including Bassett’s Kilkenny Guide and Directory for 1884 which records names and occupations for around 10,000 people. The statistical reports for the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses in Kilkenny are a great tool for background information for your family tree as they contain information right down to townland level (though please note no names are included). You can buy these individually for each year, or as a compendium. We have published the census reports for every county in Ireland. Our online shop has the full details of all our County Kilkenny related titles.
